Opiates and fentanyl contribute to the drug-related challenges for Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. In 2018, the county medical examiner reported nearly 360 deaths related to heroin overdose. Of those, 65% occurred in cases where fentanyl was also used. On its own, fentanyl is a growing problem in Fort Lauderdale. Deaths related to fentanyl overdose increased by more than 13% in southern Florida from 750 in 2017 to 851 in 2018.
The medical examiner also tracks non-fatal EMS responses to drug overdose calls in Broward County. Between 2017 and 2019, the rate of non-fatal overdose increased by 61% in Broward County, indicating the struggles with opioids and other highly addictive drugs remain a challenge in Fort Lauderdale and throughout the county. Other drugs, including methamphetamines, marijuana (weed), prescription painkillers, and psychoactive drugs, are also trouble areas in Broward County. Methamphetamines and amphetamines were linked to a combined 241 deaths in 2018, and prescription drugs (oxycodone and Xanax) were detected in 873 deaths that same year. Specific statistics for marijuana and psychoactive drugs such as MDMA, ecstasy, and molly were not provided.
